On Saturday the 23rd of April, the annual Forskningens Døgn (Festival of Research) took place at SDU. This year, more than 2500 people visited SDU, excited to learn more about the research conducted at the university and to meet the researchers themselves.

At the eScience Center’s stand, tickets to a guided tour of SDU’s server room were handed out to those who were interested in seeing SDU’s High Performance Computing (HPC) facilities and hearing about the many ways in which such facilities are used to solve research problems and contribute to scientific breakthroughs. Our guests were many – in fact our tickets were sold out by noon! – and diverse. Some were in awe of how much computer power we have available compared to their own gaming computer at home. Some were already quite knowledgeable about supercomputers and asked us very qualified questions about performance and future developments. Others were just curious to see our tour guide, Erik Madsen, taking apart one of the compute nodes and showing the audience what a CPU and a GPU looks like.

At our stand, visitors were also able to embark on a virtual tour of the LUMI facility in Finland and learn more about the size and performance of the largest supercomputer in Europe, which will become fully operational at the end of the year.

Thanks to all of those who came to visit us. We hope to see you again next year!
