{"id":7708,"date":"2023-12-11T07:18:01","date_gmt":"2023-12-11T07:18:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/?post_type=news&#038;p=7708"},"modified":"2023-12-11T07:18:01","modified_gmt":"2023-12-11T07:18:01","slug":"8000-users-on-ucloud","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"http:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/index.php\/news\/8000-users-on-ucloud\/","title":{"rendered":"8000 users on UCloud"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We&#8217;re here again &#8211; UCloud hits another milestone: There are now more than 8000 users! <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/index.php\/news\/ucloud-reaches-7000-users\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/index.php\/news\/ucloud-reaches-7000-users\/\" target=\"_blank\">This is an increase of 1000 users during less than 3 months<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The activity on the platform has been sky-high during the past few weeks &#8211; possibly amplified by the many researchers who praised the platform and inspired others at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/index.php\/news\/deic-conference-2023\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/index.php\/news\/deic-conference-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\">the DeiC conference on the 7-8th of November.<\/a>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2984\" height=\"1372\" src=\"http:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/usage.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7722\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The graph above shows the overall utilization of UCloud from the 23rd of November to the 29th of November 2023. Average utilization in this period was almost 160 % of the total national capacity. The graph also demonstrates that the system is used at maximum capacity (173,9 %) for several hours during workdays. For the users, this means that their submitted jobs are placed in a queue where they wait for the machines to become available<\/em>, <em><em>instead of running immediatel<\/em>y<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2742\" height=\"744\" src=\"http:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7723\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Another example of the system reaching maximum capacity: On the 22nd of November 2023, every single u1-standard core on UCloud was unavailable. Everything had been allocated.<\/em> <em>Since late November, this has been the general picture for <em>u1-standard cores on UCloud<\/em> during working hours<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2198\" height=\"1104\" src=\"http:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/users-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7721\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>UCloud passed 8000 users on the 21st of November 2023<\/em>.<em> The platform has thousands of active users every week, &gt;800 active projects and a retention rate of 60-80 %. This is excellent news, but also causes quite a bit of stress on the system, which is reaching its maximum capacity.  <\/em>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1442\" src=\"http:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/slide.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7724\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Part of UCloud&#8217;s success can be attributed to the platform&#8217;s<\/em> <em>ability to attract and retain new types of users. The distribution of users amongst research areas clearly demonstrates this: there is a very large portion <em>of users<\/em><\/em> <em>&#8211; 25 % &#8211; from the SSH (Social Sciences and Humanities) <em>area<\/em>, which is not something you typically see on an HPC system.  <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re here again &#8211; UCloud hits another milestone: There are now more than 8000 users!
