{"id":7999,"date":"2024-12-20T08:07:09","date_gmt":"2024-12-20T08:07:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/?post_type=news&#038;p=7999"},"modified":"2024-12-20T08:07:09","modified_gmt":"2024-12-20T08:07:09","slug":"seven-european-ai-factories-selected","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"http:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/index.php\/news\/seven-european-ai-factories-selected\/","title":{"rendered":"Seven European AI Factories Selected"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a significant move to bolster its position in the global AI landscape, the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) <a href=\"https:\/\/eurohpc-ju.europa.eu\/selection-first-seven-ai-factories-drive-europes-leadership-ai-2024-12-10_en\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/eurohpc-ju.europa.eu\/selection-first-seven-ai-factories-drive-europes-leadership-ai-2024-12-10_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has announced the selection of seven sites to host the first AI Factories in Europe<\/a>. This initiative, unveiled on December 10, 2024, marks a major milestone in the EU&#8217;s efforts to create a robust and interconnected network of AI hubs across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The selected AI Factories will be established in Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain, and Sweden. Acting as one-stop shops, they will offer AI startups, SMEs, and researchers comprehensive support, including access to AI-optimised high-performance computing (HPC) resources, training, and technical expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1984\" height=\"992\" src=\"http:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/AI-factories-visuals.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8000\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Source: EuroHPC JU<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Finland<\/strong>: The LUMI AI Factory will be hosted by CSC &#8211; IT Center for Science in Kajaani, expanding the existing LUMI supercomputer ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Germany<\/strong>: The HammerHAI AI Factory will be located at the University of Stuttgart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Greece<\/strong>: The Pharos AI Factory will be associated with the EuroHPC DAEDALUS supercomputer in Athens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Italy<\/strong>: The IT4LIA AI Factory will be established in Bologna and hosted by  CINECA as an evolution of the EuroHPC&nbsp;LEONARDO supercomputer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Luxembourg<\/strong>: The L-AI Factory will be hosted by LuxProvide in Bissen and include MeluXina-AI, an AI-optimised supercomputer, placed next to the existing EuroHPC&nbsp;MeluXina supercomputer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Spain<\/strong>: The BSC AI Factory will upgrade the existing EuroHPC MareNostrum 5 system and be located in Barcelona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sweden<\/strong>: The MIMER AI Factory will be hosted by the&nbsp;National Academic Infrastructure of Supercomputing&nbsp;(NAISS) in Sweden at&nbsp;Link\u00f6ping University, in collaboration with the&nbsp;Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More information about the AI factories can be found <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/eurohpc-ju.europa.eu\/selection-first-seven-ai-factories-drive-europes-leadership-ai-2024-12-10_en\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/eurohpc-ju.europa.eu\/selection-first-seven-ai-factories-drive-europes-leadership-ai-2024-12-10_en\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Collaborative Efforts and Funding<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative represents a collaborative effort involving 17 European countries, pooling together EU and national resources. The total investment for these AI Factories is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_24_6302\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_24_6302\" target=\"_blank\">\u20ac1.5 billion<\/a>, with half of the funding provided by the EU through the Digital Europe Programme and Horizon Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Denmark&#8217;s Role in the LUMI AI Factory<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Denmark is a key member of the consortium behind the LUMI AI Factory in Finland. Alongside Finland, the consortium includes the Czech Republic, Estonia, Norway, and Poland.
