To see the procedure that applies from 1st of January &#8211; 30th of June 2026, please visit <a href=\"https:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/index.php\/news\/temporary-change-in-sdu-policy-for-large-hpc-applications-applies-for-spring-period-2026\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/index.php\/news\/temporary-change-in-sdu-policy-for-large-hpc-applications-applies-for-spring-period-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this page<\/a>.  <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers at SDU can apply for computational resources on all the national HPC infrastructures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">Type1 &#8211; DeiC Interactive HPC<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The type 1 system is mainly focused on interactive computing and easy access for users. The system is made of the YouGene cluster hosted at SDU (see cluster specs <a href=\"https:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/?page_id=5711\">here<\/a>) and the OpenStack cluster at AAU. SDU researchers can access the cluster resources via their <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/index.php\/ucloud\/\" target=\"_blank\">UCloud<\/a> account. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Type 2 &#8211; DeiC Throughput HPC<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This type of HPC system typically has a large number of cores&nbsp;which can be a mix between cost-effective and calculation-efficient units. Type 2 also has the ability to handle large amounts of data and its main focus is on high-throughput performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three type 2 HPC systems available at national level for SDU researchers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/?page_id=5578\">Computerome 2.0<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/?page_id=5520\">GenomeDK<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/?page_id=5586\">Sophia<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hardware accessible to SDU users for a type 2 HPC project is shown in the table below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><strong>Compurerome 2.0<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><strong>GenomeDK<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><strong>Sophia<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">Xeon Gold 6230 Cascade Lake,                     40 cores, 192 GB <\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">AMD EPYC Rome 7452, 64 cores, 512 GB<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">AMD EPYC 7351, 32 cores, 128 GB<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3>LUMI Capability HPC<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>LUMI is an&nbsp;abbreviation&nbsp;for &#8220;Large Unified Modern Infrastructure&#8221;. LUMI is one of the three European pre-exascale supercomputers part of the EuroHPC project and located in CSC&#8217;s data center in Kajaani, Finland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Denmark participates in the consortium behind the LUMI supercomputer. Part of the LUMI machine therefore belongs exclusively to Denmark and is, in this sense, considered a national HPC resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information on LUMI, check the official documentation <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.lumi-supercomputer.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>How to apply <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The national HPC resources are available to SDU researchers via two separate channels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>SDU researchers can apply for national resources via&nbsp;<strong>national calls<\/strong>&nbsp;announced twice a year by the Danish e-infrastructure Consortium (DeiC). Application forms and more information can be found on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deic.dk\/da\/Supercomputere\/Sog-om-HPC-regnekraft\">DeiC website<\/a>.<\/li><li>SDU researchers can also apply for the fraction of national resources reserved&nbsp;<strong>only for SDU.&nbsp;<\/strong>These resources must be applied for via the SDU eScience Center.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you wish to apply for the national resources reserved only for SDU, notice that there are two different types of projects that you can apply for. The two types of projects have&nbsp;<strong>separate application forms and procedures<\/strong>:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Regular projects<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are applying for less than&nbsp;50.000 CPU-hours, 5.000 GPU-hours&nbsp;and\/or&nbsp;50TB of data every 6 month, your application is considered a&nbsp;regular project.&nbsp;Applications for regular projects can be submitted at any time. For LUMI and Type 2 resources, please submit your application&nbsp;via the eScience Center\u2019s&nbsp;service desk. Tor Type1 resources, please fill out a project application via&nbsp;UCloud. Regular projects&nbsp;are evaluated on a continuous basis, and&nbsp;evaluation should be expected within 2 weeks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-outline\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-red-color has-text-color no-border-radius\" href=\"https:\/\/support.escience.sdu.dk\">Service desk<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-outline\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color no-border-radius\" href=\"https:\/\/cloud.sdu.dk\/app\/dashboard\">UCloud<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New regular projects (not extensions) which require less than 1.000 CPU-hours, 100 GPU-hours, 1TB of data will be approved after checking that PI satisfies the requirements for submitting applications.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The application form for a regular project on Type 2 and LUMI can be found below. Notice that the application form is not needed for UCloud (see how to apply via UCloud&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.cloud.sdu.dk\/guide\/resources-grant.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-background\" href=\"http:\/\/escience.sdu.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Template_regular-project-application-form.docx\" style=\"background-color:#0663e5\">Application form for a regular project on LUMI and Type2<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Large projects<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are applying for more than&nbsp;50.000 CPU-hours, 5.000 GPU-hours&nbsp;and\/or&nbsp;50TB of data every 6 month, your application is considered a&nbsp;large project.&nbsp;Applications for large projects can only be submitted twice a year when an internal SDU call for national resources is announced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The internal SDU calls for national resources are announced&nbsp;in alignment&nbsp;with the DeiC national calls.&nbsp;<strong>This is because a requirement for submitting an application for a large project is that the same application has been submitted to the national DeiC call<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a researcher has received a national grant for the same application sent to SDU, the SDU application will be&nbsp;withdrawn&nbsp;automatically in order to ensure more local resources to researchers who did not receive a national grant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For large projects, SDU researchers must send both:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A filled out application form for a large projects, where they specify the amount of resources asked for. Note that the amount of resources asked for will be different from the national call and that only one form is needed even if the applicant is asking for compute time on more than one system.<\/li><li>The applications (one or more) they used for the DeiC national call.
